Instantaneous rate versus sustained useful output
A short burst of machine speed and a completed production schedule answer different questions.
Name the rate and its boundary
An instantaneous instrument reading describes one point and period. Accepted shift output includes the real production window, rejects, stops, product recovery and planned changeovers. Both can be useful, but they must not share a label as though they are interchangeable.
Do not take the minimum of unlike nameplates
Raw-fruit kg/h, liquid L/h, pulp kg/h and packages/h describe different streams. Conversions need actual material balances, density or accepted fill quantity and loss assumptions as applicable. Even comparable rates need the same product and observation conditions before supporting a line-constraint decision.
Use buffers for timing, not missing average capacity
Trend supply, demand and inventory. A buffer may bridge a short interruption within its usable volume and acceptable holding conditions. It cannot maintain output indefinitely when average supply remains lower than demand. More stored product can also lengthen residence time and complicate cleaning.
